It is a question asked by one of our clients. The short answer is: no. You shouldn’t add categories and tags with the same name. Here is why.
WordPress taxonomy
Categories and tags are used to better organize your WordPress content. With it you raise the probability of better website ranking. Using a blog as a long tail keyword generator you can attract potential customers and target audience. But not only post titles work for rankings – categories and tags too.
If you use the same phrase for category and tag, e.g. “Gutenberg editor” it is recognized as a cannibalization of keywords which lead to lower ranking and even ban from search engine bots. The phrases can be similar like “Gutenberg editor tutorials” and “Gutenberg editor blocks” but shouldn’t be the same.
Organizing WordPress content
This brings us to the most important question we should ask ourselves: what is it for? The most interested part is our target audience. The post, articles, tutorials and any other kind of content is created for a specific group. Categories and tags can help lead them to find solutions they need.
Here you can find useful tactics how to better organize your content. If you have any questions we would love to help you 🙂
